{"id":2352,"date":"2025-03-25T17:19:20","date_gmt":"2025-03-25T17:19:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/haella.nl\/foundation\/?post_type=news&#038;p=2352"},"modified":"2025-03-25T17:19:20","modified_gmt":"2025-03-25T17:19:20","slug":"trust-as-a-starting-and-ending-point","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/haella.nl\/foundation\/news\/trust-as-a-starting-and-ending-point\/","title":{"rendered":"Trust as a Starting and Ending Point"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Trust as a Starting and Ending Point<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two most common questions or remarks I get when I travel to visit partners and projects are these: <strong>Are you going there to evaluate or monitor them?<\/strong> and <strong>Oh, how brave \u2014 isn\u2019t it incredibly hard to travel through those countries and witness all that suffering?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answers are: <strong>no, no, and yes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Haella is built on one solid foundation: <strong>trust<\/strong>. I don\u2019t need a theory of change or a five-year plan. I actually dislike the word <em>impact<\/em>, or worse, <em>impact indicator<\/em>. I believe in people who see a problem, observe it closely, and then take action. And in situations like those here at the borders (and elsewhere), you shouldn\u2019t burden people with requests for detailed plans or only give money for activity X or Y. The situation literally changes every day. So what do we do? We simply give money because we <strong>believe<\/strong> in what people do. What we do here is mostly <strong>observe, listen, ask questions<\/strong>, and talk to a wide range of people \u2014 and then zoom out to ask: what does this mean for Haella? What more can we do to fill the gaps, to tell the world what\u2019s happening here, and to support the people working in these organizations? A project doesn\u2019t improve because I ask for long reports. On the contrary \u2014 bureaucracy has crushed many good plans. We truly try to be a <strong>partner<\/strong>. <strong>Trust is our starting point, and our end point.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traveling isn\u2019t hard \u2014 as long as you\u2019re prepared for things to never go as planned. We\u2019ve been stuck in a violent storm for days now. We were supposed to take the boat to Chios and then to Samos, but it was taken out of service. So we flew to Samos instead, which turned out to be quite a terrifying experience \u2014 landing in a storm with strong crosswinds\u2026 let\u2019s just say it wasn\u2019t exactly a soft landing. Lianne and I held on to each other for a moment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seeing suffering \u2014 that always hits you. Especially this kind, on the edges of Europe. It doesn\u2019t have to be this way \u2014 <strong>no<\/strong>, it <strong>shouldn\u2019t<\/strong> be this way \u2014 in fact, it <strong>must not<\/strong> be this way. And yet, it is. It\u2019s a journey along barbed wire, police, military zones, and meetings with people in organizations who are incredibly brave \u2014 and sometimes just exhausted. They bring hope, but they often have to pull it up from the depths of their souls. We speak with people who have endured so much, who carry heavy sorrow behind their smiles. That means <strong>listening, feeling deeply<\/strong>, sometimes <strong>crying<\/strong>, and then moving forward with even more conviction. And knowing: there\u2019s a huge group of people out there who <strong>really care<\/strong>. We want to stand with them. We want to support them. And we want to <strong>show the world<\/strong> that this is <strong>truly unacceptable<\/strong> \u2014 and that things <strong>can be different<\/strong>.
